Iran to declare self-sufficiency in barley, corn: minister
TEHRAN – Iran would soon be self-sufficient in barley and corn, said the Iranian agriculture minister during the 11th Round of Iran-Cuba Economic Commission.
Thanking the head of the Cuban Delegation and Minister of Government Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, Eskandari implied that with removal of barriers to trade between Iran and Cuba, the two countries can increase the volume of exchanges.
“Our joint projects will from now on be backed by letters of credit,” the Iranian official stated.
Chabahar shrimp production projected to hit 3000 tons annually
CHABAHAR, Sistan-Baluchestan Prov. – More than two million shrimp juveniles have been released into a fish farm in Gwatar site to set the beginning of this year’s shrimp farming in the area.
The process will take at least two months to complete. More than 3,000 tons of shrimp is expected to be produced in Chabahar in the current Iranian year (ends March 20, 2007).
Shrimp farmers work two seasons per year in this southeastern Iranian port, thanks to the region’s unique climatic conditions. These ponds cover a total area of 1,300 hectares.
ITMC says exports set to increase 100%
TEHRAN – The annual exports of the Tabriz-based Iran Tractor Manufacturing Company (ITMC) will increase by 100 percent in the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2007), a company official stated on Saturday.
“We have planned to export 100 million dollars of our products,” he added. ITMC will sell 7,000 of its tractors abroad of which 5,000 will be destined for Venezuela.
The company’s tractor production is also set to reach 31,000 to corroborate 20 percent increase compared to the last year’s figures. A new plan at the ITMC is to manufacture 140-horsepower, 85-horsepower, and 47-horsepower tractors in the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year.
Boao Forum for Asia concludes Sunday in Hainan
TEHRAN – The Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) annual meeting 2006 opened Saturday morning at the International Conference Center in Boao, a scenic town in China's southernmost island province of Hainan.
Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong presented the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech. The BFA 2006 meeting, with the theme "Asia searching for win-win: drive growth to the next level", has attracted some 850 politicians, business leaders and scholars from a number of countries in the world. A top official from the Foreign Ministry represents Iran in this two-day meeting.
Iran to import 1.2m tons of wheat
TEHRAN – The government started to import wheat from Canada and Australia in the last Iranian year, an official with the Commerce Ministry stated, adding they would continue wheat imports to supply domestic demands.
“We will import a total of 1.2 million tons of wheat from these two countries,” he said, but added that Iran would be supplying the domestic market with only Iranian wheat some time in the future.
He also pointed to the private sector’s success in exporting 10,000 tons of wheat flour to Afghanistan. “They (private sector) have so far sent us 87 requests for building silos,” the official uttered.
Bushehri ports exported over $617m of goods last year
BUSHEHR – More than 2.4 million tons of goods, valued at $617.6 million, was exported via the ports of this southern Iranian province in the last Iranian year.
This showed five percent decrease (in value) compared to the previous figures. The Bushehr Port Customs accounted for over 1 million tons of the volume at $387.8 million.
The ports mostly exported handicrafts as well as industrial and agricultural products. Also in the said period, some 900,477 tons of commodities were imported via Bushehr Province’s ports. The imported volume was valued over one billion dollars.
